In the event of a disaster or crisis, you may need to leave your home quickly. Or you have to stay indoors until it’s safe to go outside again. That’s why it’s useful to always have an emergency kit for at least three days at home.

Your emergency kit should contain at least the following items:

  • 3 liters of water per person per day
  • Shelf-stable food such as canned vegetables/food, crackers, biscuits, peanut butter
  • A portable battery-powered radio
  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • Candles
  • Matches
  • A first aid kit with instructions
  • Blankets
  • Cash
  • A copy of your ID card, passport, driver’s license, insurance documents. Keep these in a waterproof plastic bag
  • Extra keys of your house and car
  • A toolbox
  • Toilet paper, soap, laundry detergent, sanitary pads, toothpaste, toothbrushes
  • A list of addresses and phone numbers of family and friends you can go to if you need to leave your home.

Put the items in a bag that you can easily take with you. Put the bag in a convenient place where you can easily reach it. Check every six months whether your emergency kit is in order or needs replenishing.

Do you have to leave your home due to a disaster or crisis? Don’t forget to also take the following items with you:

  • Original passport, ID card, driver’s license, insurance papers
  • Medications
  • Mobile phone + charger
  • Money and debit/credit cards
