What can you do before a major fire
Check if there is an evacuation plan for the house you live in, the building you work in, or buildings you frequently visit. Is there no evacuation plan for your workplace? Consult with your employer to have such a plan drawn up. Ensure that fire extinguishers are easily accessible.
What to do during a major fire
- Evacuate the burning building as quickly as possible. Assist children and people who require help in getting away promptly.
- If visibility is poor due to smoke, try to stay close to the floor.
- Wet a cloth and hold it against your nose and mouth.
- Close all doors and windows behind you.
- Call 911 if the fire department has not been called yet.
- Use the stairs; do not use the elevator!
- If you cannot exit the building, stand in front of window so that the firefighters can see you.
- Never go back into a building on fire.
